Dietary Sources of Fats and Oils

Saturated Fats:

Animal products, coconut and palm oils

Hydrogenated fats:

Processed foods, fried foods

Monounsaturated Fats:

Olives, olive oil, nuts, avocados, canola oil

Polyunsaturated:

Omega 6: Oils from corn, soybeans, safflower, cottonseed

Omega 3: Salmon, herring, tuna, flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil

Definition:
Essential Fatty Acids
Two polyunsaturated fatty acids which are essential nutrients and must be obtained from the diet. One is linoleic acid and the other is linolenic acid. Linoleic acid is an omega 6 fatty acid and is found in most vegetable oil. Linolenic acid is an omega 3 fatty acid is found in flaxseed oil, walnuts, and canola oil.
